Hands-on with the Angelus Chronodate Red Gold Watch

Retaining some but not all of its original features, the functional design of the Angelus Chronodate is celebrating 80 years of success this year with the brand’s release of the new Angelus Chronodate Red Gold watch, limited to just 25 pieces worldwide

If you consider yourself a true fan of vintage timepieces and luxury watches powered by excellent in-house movements, you’re bound to be acquainted with Angelus. The manufacturer made a reputation for itself during the 20th century and has since gone from strength to strength, launching irresistible timepieces with an admirable level of complexity and skill. The brand lay dormant for 30 years and was only revived in 2015 by Swiss movement manufacturer La Joux-Perret. To mark a significant chronograph produced by Angelus 80 years ago, the manufacturer now unveils the new Chronodate Red Gold watch, clad in a striking 18ct rose gold and rich blue outfit.

The significance of the Angelus Chronodate

In 1942, Angelus released the world’s first chronograph watch with a triple date calendar that showed the day, week and month on the dial. Angelus has never set out to reinvent heritage models since it became revived a few years ago, so it comes as no surprise that the new Chronodate Red Gold watch bears very little resemblance to the first Chronodate watch. There had to be a new way to pay homage to the values of the old Chronodate watch in the form of this new and exciting limited edition chronograph. Before we get into just how Angelus has done that, let’s touch on what few similarities there are. Firstly, the elapsed minutes and running seconds sub-dials are still present on the dial. Secondly, the hour track is still represented by Arabic numerals. Lastly, the date track around the outer edge of the dial still remains in a pointer style format for easy readability. Surviving the makeover are the syringe type hands also.

New features of the Angelus Chronodate Red Gold Limited Edition watch

One of the biggest changes to appear on the new Angelus Chronodate Red Gold and Titanium models is the removal of the day and month window that formerly completed the original Chronodate watches of the past. This is undoubtedly a bold step for Angelus since the triple calendar feature was the signature element of the Chronodate watch. That said, there are still many things to get excited about with this new release for 2022. The blue dial of the new Angelus Chronodate Red Gold watch is a frosted PVD blue colour. The blue tracks around the date scale and black trims around the sub-dial features are also elevated, creating a sense of depth. Matching the dial’s white luminous Arabic numeral hour markers and syringe-style hands are several gold-coloured elements. These include the chronograph central second hand, the pointer date hand with a red arrow tip and a small seconds hand. These, together with the red-coated 30-minute sub-dial hand are all controlled by an all-new chronograph column-wheel movement. The A-500 automatic chronograph movement boasts a striking rotor depicting the shape of Angelus’ logo. It also operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers a power reserve of 60 hours. Through a sapphire-backed case, the movement’s sandblasted mainplate, microbeaded and NAC-treated bridges, circular and rhodium-plated wheels, and tungsten oscillating weight are all put on view.

The 18ct rose gold case of the new Angelus Chronodate Red Gold watch measures a 42.5mm diameter and boasts a brushed finish. Cut-outs along the sides of the case can be seen all around its circumference. Wings on either side of the crown act as protection guards, whilst the crown showcases a bright red rubber ring around its circumference. This feature not only acts as a practical advantage to aid grip but also adds a vibrant and sporty undertone to this new chronograph style. The cut-outs seen along the bezel are similar to those seen in the Angelus U-41 model. A black composite carbon material forms a matte ring that can be seen underneath the metal sections.

The hands and hour markers of the new Angelus Chronodate Red Gold watch emit a bright blue colour in the dark and the dial also features a gold-coloured Angelus logo. All of these fetching features are protected underneath a strong piece of anti-glare sapphire crystal glass. This box-style glass front is repeated on the reverse of the watch case, which, as aforementioned, exposes the harmoniously working elements of the movement through its lens. Limited to just 25 pieces worldwide, the new rose gold Angelus Chronodate watch is completed on a matching blue rubber strap that secures to the wrist with an 18ct rose gold buckle.
